  • Emphasise the confidentiality of the conversation.
  • Example introduction: “This meeting is to ensure we understand your needs and can make adjustments to support you effectively. Everything discussed here is confidential.”
2. Understanding the employee’s experience
  • Use open-ended questions to encourage the employee to share their experiences with their thyroid condition, such as:
“How does your thyroid condition affect you on a day-to-day basis?”
“What challenges have you been facing at work related to your condition?”
“Are there specific tasks or times of day that are more difficult for you?”
“Are there specific symptoms that impact your work?”
“What are your biggest challenges in the workplace?”
“What kind of support would be most helpful for you?”
3. Exploring potential adjustments
  • Discuss potential workplace adjustments based on the employee’s symptoms and challenges (Checklist of support).
4. Developing a support plan
  • Collaboratively create a plan that outlines the agreed-upon adjustments and support strategies.
  • Set clear timelines for implementation and review of the plan.
5. Ongoing communication and resources
  • Encourage ongoing communication and feedback regarding the adjustments and support provided.
  • Provide information on available resources, such as:
Internal support (HR department, Occupational Health)
External support (NHS and thyroid-related charities and patients support groups) (NHS information and support)
Self-help resources (stress management techniques, healthy lifestyle information)
6. Closing and follow-up
  • Summarise the key points of the meeting and the agreed-upon support plan.
  • Schedule a follow-up meeting to review the plan’s effectiveness and make any necessary adjustments.
